Cambrian College Partners with NSS Canada to Provide Students with Cutting-Edge Mining Technology

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NSS Canada facilitates the training and access to new technology and cutting-edge equipment for Cambrian College students in the Mining Engineering Technician Program.

This partnership allows students to have access to new technology in the mining industry which provides huge value for their future careers and experience in the field. The Miner Operated Survey System (MOSS) is an underground surveying software that supports a wide range of Leica robotic total stations. MOSS integrates mine design specifications and drawings when completing mark-ups, and provides real-time information for miners, engineers, and geologists.

Access to this kind of technology is costly without these kinds of partnerships. As graduates of the Cambrian College program, President Bruno Lalonde, and General Manager Matthew Brown from NSS Canada are examples of grads giving back to our local educational institutions.

“As a Cambrian alumnus, my goal is to provide current students with the resources, training and cutting-edge technology needed to thrive in the field. Having the opportunity to train future employees with new technology ensures they can learn and bring that knowledge and education into the workforce.” -Bruno Lalonde, NSS Canada President

“Having had such a positive experience from my studies in the Mining Engineering Technician program at Cambrian, I feel like it’s time for me to give back to not only the college, but to the next generation of students. The progressive experience I’ve had in the industry has shown me how valuable being exposed to new technology and knowing how to adapt to it is. This knowledge will serve students in the long term while driving them to challenge thinking, and really push the limits of what technology can do for the Mining Industry.” -Matthew Brown, NSS Canada General Manager

Cambrian students now have access to state-of-the-art surveying equipment and technology for a hands-on learning experience in an underground setting. Students will perform day-to-day tasks such as Production Surveys, Development Surveys, and Mine Planning using MOSS.

“This is a great example of work-integrated learning in action,” says Kim Crane, Chair of Cambrian’s School of Engineering Technology and Environmental Studies. “Students get a first-hand taste of the workplace and they get to experience the latest equipment, technologies and techniques. It’s also a great way to connect with a potential future employer. We’re so grateful to industry partners like NSS for giving our students this opportunity.”

“It was a great day learning both MOSS and the CMS capabilities with NSS. It was very informative and exciting to be able to learn these new technologies which are on the forefront of leading the industry. I am looking forward to processing the data collected from today as well as trying the new AR goggles and technology in the coming weeks.” -Kaiden Harrietha, 3rd Year Mining Student
